In making platters, I like to use simple shapes as a background to abstract decoration. I’m inspired by textile designs from the early 20th century and like to use the minimum of tools – I think handmade should be just what the words themselves mean!

Full description
Use this eyecatching platter or plate to show off fruit, nuts, seashore finds, to hold loose change, or keys. It could also find a place in a bedroom to hold earrings or rings. I formed the piece from a rectangle of soft clay, with all sides slightly curving upwards. I decorated each end differently with abstract mid-century style motifs and irregular stripes in a creamy lemon shade against the matt black stoneware background of the natural clay. The central panel is glazed in a high gloss dark olive green. Fired twice with a final firing of 1185 degrees C. Underneath is my potter’s mark of a swallow in flight impressed into the clay. A one-off piece, which will look good in modern homes to complement your interior design taste. Size 17.5cms x 19.5 cms.
