After 'round work', the next learning challenge in basketmaking is 'oval work'. Maintaining equally shaped and balanced rounded ends and a regular height throughout can be quite a challenge. But oval baskets - like rectangular ones are easy to carry by your side. This one is a classic combination of buff and white willow in a size which is useful for a bit of shopping or carrying library books.
If you wish to purchase more than one item from our shop, please contact us so we can recalculate the postage and packing costs.

There are many thousands of different varieties of willow grown right across the world. The most commonly used for basketry are Salix triandra, Salix viminalis and Salix purpurea. Of these there are many more or less suitable for basketmaking - the most commonly used being Salix triandra 'Black Maul'.
Black Maul in itself can be used in four ways - as the standard brown basket willow; boiled and stripped of it's bark which produces the lovely honey-coloured buff willow; as white willow - where Black Maul is cut in the winter and left to stand in shallow trays of water until it starts to shoot - then stripped of it's bark to leave a white coloured rod; and steamed willow - where it is steamed in tanks which darkens it to a chocolate colour.
Willow baskets should last for many years and have traditionally been handed down from generation to generation. Once or twice a year, put your basket outside in the rain - or give it a gentle scrub with some water and a kitchen brush. This will clean the dust off it and refresh the willows.
I hope you enjoy your basket
