A pair of handmade lamina

This is an traditional Japanese technique of burning and charring wood. Mainly for protection for wood exteriors like fences or gates etc. It has gone to a whole different level, where it has been foted wood tea light holders. Made from off cuts of poplar and Sapele. These are finished using a Japanese method of preserving wood then using a blue spirit stain.
They are roughly 3" square or 78mm by just over an inch thick. (25mm)

The technique is a very effective finish to furniture and other wood items. But it has to be done in the right way for creating a great effect. This can be a timely process of burning and then brushing with different types of brushes dependant on the type of wood. There is a technique to the burning, brushing and staining that is significant for its effectiveness. This can raise the grain in the wood and be eye catching, further more, the introduction of different colour wood dyes and stains can push it to yet another amazing level. But again, more work is required to get the staining effect just right.
