Item details

Working with spalted wood is a challenge because the wood can be very soft and the grain patterns disturbed. Woodturners call it "punky". It requires sharp tools and careful finishing. This willow tree fell over in strong wind in a park very close to my home. This bit of wood I left on the ground for 6 months to maximise the fungal infection. I then turned it to an initial shape, and boiled it in water. This has a similar effect to steaming and removes stresses form the wood. It also kills any fungal spores that may still be present. Then it was very carefully dried it out in a microwave, which has a similar effect and leaves the wood dry for turning to its final shape.

Full description

Small bowl made on a lathe from willow. Heavily spalted bowl, with intricate patterns caused by fungal infection. Although suitable for food, this bowl is best used for display to show off the beautiful spalting.

Weight: 111g, diameter 122mm, height 60mm.

Care: This bowl has been treated with a mixture of food safe beeswax and mineral oil. Don't immerse in water or put in a dishwasher, and avoid placing near a radiator. If the wood looks like it is drying out, treat with mineral oil (look for chopping board oil), or a beeswax-based product.
