Bowls, vases and other shapes made from wood

I have have been fascinated with the process of creating new shapes out of wood with a lathe as long as I can remember. Life has not always allowed me the time and space to indulge this passion, but in the last two years I have had the chance to return to the lathe. Wood is such a varied and rich material, and making something on a lathe or carving by hand feels like a dialogue between the maker and the wood. Sometimes the wood will just reveal itself simply and take the form it is meant to have. At other times it is harder to find the right shape. And in some cases there is just no common ground, mostly because I have misunderstood what is possible with that piece of wood.

I work with wood from local trees and from a local arboretum. I try to find shapes that suits the particular species and piece of wood and brings out the grain and other natural features. I am also experiment with using fungi to induce spalting in wood to create interesting colours and patterns. I hope you find something here with pleases you and brings joy to you.
