In 2019/20 I was asked to restore a spinning wheel, which would then be sold, raising funds for 2 charities. Like a fairy-tale ending, the wheel reached its final destination on Fair Isle.
The lady who bought the wheel is a crofter on Fair Isle and since we made this unusual and delightful connection, I have followed her life as a crofter, via Instagram.
Rachel regularly shares images of her life, her animals and the history of Fair Isle. She very kindly allowed me to use some of her photos as reference material for this pastel painting.
'Springtime on Fair Isle' is my first pastel painting on Mi-teintes Touch paper, and was a real joy to use. Of course not all of Springtime is quite so severe on the Island but it gives you the sense of life and work and the landscape of the beautiful Fair Isle.
