My painting depicts the 16th change of horses at The Red Lion pub, but with a twist : I painted the scene showing the present day in colour on the left, and fading into black and white as the scene reverts to the moment Lapenotiere's post-chaises pulls into the Red Lion for the 16th change of horses, some 200 years earlier.
I’m fascinated by those ‘old and new combined’ photos, where full-colour present-day scenes are superimposed onto old black and white photos, and thought this would make an interesting theme for a painting.
The shopper is blissfully unaware of the history of the road she just crossed and the pub she drank in last night! But the dog has a sixth sense, and feels the carriage rush passed on its journey.
This reconnection to the past, and the orders of Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood to Lapenotiere to travel "using every exertion, that a moment's time may not be lost in their delivery." lead me the title of the painting....
