Full description

This listing is for a handmade tribal chess set, cold cast in gypsum and finished in old chess gold and copper antique effect (Chess pieces only) .

The chess set pieces are a replica of an antique chess set that was hand carved sometime around the 1940's.

These chess sets were popular in the 30's and 40's and were made in Africa to be sold in the tourist markets and bazaars of Egypt, and from there onward to the rest of the world.

The chess set pieces have a lot of the hand carved markings associated with a hand carved artwork. The original chess pieces were carved in wood and then treated using local pigments. .

This is quite a substantial chess set and I absolutely love it. It really is a fine example of these types of chess pieces. I can actually easily see it sitting in the study of Indiana Jones.

The dimensions of the individual chess pieces are approximate due to the hand carved nature of the original chess set and are as follows:

King 12 cms tall with a 3 cm oval base

Queen 12 cms tall with a 3 cm oval base

Bishop 9.5 cms with a 3 cm rectangular base

Knight is just under 7 cms tall with a rectangular base measuring 3.5 cms by 2 cms.

The Rook is just over 8 cms tall with an oval base measuring aprox 3.5cms by 2.5 cms.

The pawns are 5.5 cms with a 2 cm base (aprox)

With so many positives to playing chess it is hardly surprising that so many more people are making playing chess a part of their daily lives, so why not take the plunge!
