Item details

This is a woodturned platter or bowl. It is made by hand on a lathe from a piece of Ash wood. The dark, wide rim appears simple at first glance but on closer inspection radial outwardly projecting lines of yellows, reds, greens and blues are visible, giving the platter an almost space-like quality. The underlying grain of the ash remains visible.

Handmade in Surrey in May 2021, this platter measures 23.5cm across and 4cm tall. The central bowl portion is 12.5cm wide and 2.5cm deep.

Care instructions: do not submerge, do not put in dishwasher. Wipe with damp cloth if required.

Note - due to the grain of the wood and the nature of woodturning, each piece may have minor imperfections. I like to think of this as "character" and it means each item is unique!

The ash is first rounded on the lathe between centres before shaping the bottom (outer) aspect of the bowl. Then it is mounted in a chuck and the upper aspect of the bowl is turned flat. I then coated this surface sanding sealer followed by ebonising lacquer. Acrylic paints are then added around the centre. A spritz of water and then I quickly turn the lathe up to its maximum speed, so the paint spreads out across the rim. This is repeated with multiple different colours to give the striking effect seen! After this is complete, I turn out the central bowl before everything is given a coat of hard-wearing acrylic lacquer.
