About Heartwood Craftings

Heartwood Craftings

I'm a doctor with a passion for woodworking!

My name is Luke. I'm a doctor with a passion for woodworking. During the first lockdown in 2020, a pottery course I had signed up for was cancelled, and so I decided to purchase a second hand lathe instead. Since then, I have been slowly teaching myself woodturning. Alongside this I continue my other woodwork and find it all a great stress relief after a busy day of work!

If you took a well-established hardwood tree like an Oak, Cherry or Walnut, and cut it across the trunk to give circular cross-sections, there are two distinct areas. The outer, lighter part is called sapwood and is involved in nutrient and water transport up the tree. As the tree grows, the older sapwood dries and becomes incorporated into the middle of the trunk. This middle section is called heartwood.

As the wood dries, organic matter builds up and changes the colour and properties of the wood. As a result, the heartwood is usually darker in colour, much drier, and very strong - providing the structure and strength to the tree. These properties make the heartwood ideal for use in woodworking - whether it is small decorative items that show off the colour and grain of the wood, or large weight-bearing items of furniture.
