I love collecting, especially things that have been discarded. Anything that looks lost, forgotten, damaged and not wanted any more. Favourite places of mine to discover bits is rivers or beaches. I am lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-created into something new. I love recycling centres and charity shops where I can find an old pot or plate, so many interesting pieces, bits and bobs of lives all waiting to find new homes.

Created from ceramic discovered
in River Tees September 2019
Re-Created into pendant January 2020
In September 2019 while out walking the banks of the River Tees, Barnard Castle, Co Durham I came across a small concentration of broken bits of pottery. A common practice of shoring up a river bank is to use hardcore that often has household ceramics crushed in.. Some bits will remain where dumped but a lot will move with the river which adds to the experience of discovering.
I found this shard while paddling in a shallow part of the river Tees very near ‘the meetings of the waters’ – where the Rivers Tees and Greta join. I saw the blue and white piece laying flat in a sandy area and when I picked it up was delighted to see the pattern was on both sides. Curved in shape, hardly damaged with no stains this shard has been a favourite of mine since I found it.
I created the pendant in January 2020 and although a necklace it looks striking as a decoration, perhaps hanging from a from a drawer handle, there’s something really charming about the pattern, shape and general feel of this shard.
Can be worn either way but when I made it I had in mind it would sit against the body with it curved outwards creating a 3D unusual pendant.
The pendant is hanging on non leather woven cord, 44cm plus 5cm extender.
Shard measures approxiamtely 35mm x 15mm x 5mm.
