I keep chickens and they are up there with my all time favourite animals. They keep me entertained with their antics and are ever present companions when I'm working in the garden. We have recently acquired a rescue cockerel who is yet to be imortalised in a painting. He is not as colourful as this handsome Leghorn however.
I began this painting with very loose and fluid watercolour using long quick brushstrokes to achieve all those marvelous ruff and tail feathers. Once dry I worked with smaller brushes and in more detail on his head and comb. I used pen to add some more detail. Finally finishing with splashes,speckles and finer lines to give a feeling of movement to the composition.
