A hand carved Butter Knife fashioned from a wildly grained log of Damson from the gardens of Waltham Abbey next to the Cornmill Stream. It was thick with ivy and very wonky, but it's absolutely fantastic - several tiny knots with a golden center and then outrageous dark greenish brown stripes wandering all the way down the handle to the tip of the spreading blade. Now that's what I call a real treat to find inside a scabby old log!
it was a real challenge to carve with that grain changing direction every quarter of an inch but, ohhh, so satisfying. As with all my kitchen wares it's been made to be used daily from early morning with that slice of toast and flipping your bacon rashers over to later on when you're icing that cake and is a great stirrer for your non stick pans. A truly multi functional utensil all ready to go and make your meals taste twice as good.
I've finished it with an organic flax oil and the beautiful patina will simply improve with use.
Measures approximately 7.5inches (8.5cm) long and 1inch (2.5cm)wide
I can never resist a log and when I saw this one I knew it would be interesting to work on simply because it was such a gnarled intractable unlikely looking piece of timber. Damson wood is often quite reddish purple when you split it open to work but this was something really special. Not very wide as a log so I knew I'd be making special small items and this is the first of several ideas...
