I am never one to pass up free raw materials and bottles often come in such good quality glass that it seems a crime to just smash them up for recycling. These wine bottles are a heavier weight glass than the usual and such a tall elegant shape it makes them perfect for turning into vases.
To create the vase I cut off the top of the bottle and ground the glass smooth, before sandblasting the design on and finishing the surface with a protective coating.

This elegant column vase is a lovely home accent for anyone looking for a sustainable option, having been created from an empty wine bottle. It will compliment tall stemmed fresh or dried flowers, but looks equally eye catching standing empty.
The slender column vase is a rich olive green glass in a cylindrical shape. I have given the glass an etched finish, leaving a sparkling design of a flight of butterflies among the long grass. The etched finish is permanent and has a protective coating to resist finger marks. As with most good wine bottles, this has a deep punt or dimple in the base.
Olive green etched recycled glass bottle vase, handmade by me in my home studio on the Wirral peninsula, in north-west England.
DIMENSIONS: The vase is 8cm (3") in diameter and 20cm (8") tall.
CARE: Gentle handwash only to retain the protective surface coating and wipe with a microfibre cloth. I do not advise putting this vase in the dishwasher as over time this will dull the surface.
