The Khuzebar were a people of Siberia, now sadly extinct. Their beliefs and mysticism were fascinating and unique in that they believed not only that a shaman could attract and charm spirits using instruments like this, but also that humans actually needed to consume certain kinds of spirit in order to survive.
The Ghost Catcher is a form of musical bow, one of the oldest kinds of musical instrument. It is held between the lips and the strings plucked with the fingers, or struck using the (included) striker. The body of the instrument can also be struck in a similar fashion to a clave. The sound resonates in the mouth of the player producing an etherial tone that can be modulated by adjusting the tongue, lips and cheeks.
This model features guitar pegs for easy tuning and reinforced string holes. Strings are provided and can be changed in the same manner as a guitar. It is approximately 32 inches long.
Please keep in mind that, like all musical bows, the Ghost Catcher is a very quiet instrument. The shamans of the Khuzebar would say that this is because it is intended to be heard by spirits and insects, not by humans. It is an excellent tool for meditational purposes.
This example is made from reclaimed hardwood timber which I believe to be white elm. Other timbers are available to order at varying costs. Wherever possible I make the striker and the instrument from the same tree.
I've been playing the Jaw Harp since I was a kid, and always wanted to add a mouth bow to my collection. Since these instruments are not often found in musical shops, I decided to do a little research and make my own. Eventually I found the design favoured by the Khuzebar people and was enamoured with both its simplicity and the double string which can be tuned to a variety of chords, as well as with the fascinating history and spirituality that comes with it.
