The rare breed of Soay sheep are very small, (the little sheep in the picture is one of those whose fleece I used :) ) and so they don’t give a lot of wool in one fleece. I had two small fleeces of different colours and blended them before spinning the wool (on an antique spinning wheel I call ‘Jewel’). The wool contains small nobbles, known as ‘noils’, which give texture to the yarn, along with the varied colours, which all add to the character of the item.
I designed this hooded scarf so that it could be knitted in one piece, while creating the interesting shaped scarf-ends. It was knitted using Moss stitch, which gives it a satisfying textured feel. I call the scarf style 'Simba', after one of the dogs I used to have years ago when I lived in Orkney. I like to name my designs after the various pets I've had - it's a lovely way to remember them.
