A stoneware bowl with blue and cream colouration that reflect the melting and flow of the glaze over the texture marks, its consequent thickness and its interaction with the clay minerals The glaze was applied in several layers to obtain the required thickness. The pale blue and cream inside is where the glaze has pooled and thickened around the central lobster imprint. The bowl was thrown with an iron-rich UK stoneware and after biscuit firing and glazing the piece was fired to 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable. This wheel thrown bowl would be great for display in any domestic setting or it could function as a serving dish for fruit, hot food or salad. Itmeasures approximately 6cm tall and 20cm wide and is food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe. The bottom is stamped with my seal, the letter P, and the identity number 9844.
I love the process of throwing, shaping and decorating bowls in anticipation of the interactions between clay, texture, glaze chemistry and firing conditions. The bowl was fired with a titanium glaze that pools inside to cream and blue. The imprinted lobster, colours and texture were inspired by rock-pools and marine images. This bowl would make a personal statement on a table or shelf with or without contents and invites discussion of personal visual associations. On a more mundane level it could be used for cooking and serving seafood.
