Ever since I discovered a tattoo hiding on my Grandad’s calf under his trouser leg I have been fascinated with them. I couldn’t have been much older than four years, he was the most unlikely man to have had a tattoo.
When he was stationed in India waiting to go into Burma in the Second World War he got very drunk and had a dagger with a ribbon with Nellie (my Nan's name) tattooed upon his calf. It was proper old school... I loved it and would regularly sit by his feet and start pulling his trouser leg up to see it , much to his annoyance, but he would let me.
This has left me with a life long love of tattoo art even though I have none myself. I love the simplicity of the use of bold lines and colours in the old tattoos and how over time they change colour and bleed.
I really admire tattoo artists and how with the advancement of equipment and inks, they have taken the old school ideas to another level in recent years.
So again my Grandad is the root inspiration for this piece.

Who wants to go to the Masked Butterfly Ball, I think you may see this lady attending.
This hand embroidered piece of textile wall art I have created, reminds me of a hedonistic bygone era.
I used the old school tattoo art style to create a drawing of her first, before turning her into a embroidery.
I have lovingly hand stitched this original piece using vintage Anchor and DMC threads on to beautiful raw linen.
I have hand embroidered her bold outline in black backstitch to replicate the outline of a tattoo.
Her hair and mask are filled with chain stitch.... a real labour of love!
I have used a dark red satin stitch to fill her lips.
In the traditional manner I have laced and stretched this piece of embroidery art over acid free mount board. Then framed her in an original vintage 1970’s moulded plastic gold oval frame without glass as it distorts the stitches.
The frame measures 31cm x 26cm and is 3.5cm deep.
Without the frame this piece of unique art measures 24cm x 19cm.
As the frame is true vintage it has a few scuffs and scratches.
The postage is included in the price, as this is a one off piece of art I will send Royal Mail Special Delivery.
If you have the time please have a look around my shop you may find some more tattoo style embroideries there.
Many thanks
