Whether I'm out walking or just looking around me in our garden, I constantly see beautiful leaves whose characters I long to transfer to cloth.
Eco printing is a natural-dyeing technique where leaves are bundled with fabric and heat from steam or water releases the dye found inside them, creating an imprint sometimes breathtakingly full of detail, at other times more diffused. Leaves from the same plant in another season may yield different colours as the pigments have subtly altered during the weeks and months.
It takes many hours to prepare the cloth, lay and bundle the plant material, heat and wait, unwrap and wash – truly slow-living. I use no powdered mordants, just natural substances. The unwrapping of each bundle is always joyful, exciting and often a complete surprise. You can read more about the making of this scarf on my blog.

This beautiful, soft scarf has been entirely coloured by the pigments from within the oak leaves used to print it and captures the moment in time from the season in which they were gathered. Their forms have been transferred permanently into the cloth to give a truly individual piece of wearable art.
Eco printing is a slow, reflective process - perfectly in tune with taking time to dwell on the beauty in nature. The oak leaves have made wonderfully subtle and diffuse prints in gentle shades of mushroom and warm brown, with hints of green and charcoal and a lovely interaction of the leaf shapes on the ivory background as the prints combine. The pigments transfer right through the fabric, with clearer prints on the front. The silk holds a memory of the time it has spent in contact with the leaves and the exact way in which it was bundled and rolled with them. Tiny pleats and furrows formed during the process will be set into the fabric together with the colours, resulting in a piece with totally unique qualities.
The scarf is pure silk crepe de chine 8, which has a lovely drape and sheen and feels beautiful to wear. Slight imperfections of the weave of the fabric are characteristic. It is approximately 176cm x 35cm, has a hand-rolled edge and can be gently handwashed. It will be sent by Royal Mail First Class Recorded Delivery.
Please be aware that monitor colours vary, and that I work in a smoke-free home but do have enthusiastic cat help from time to time!
