Item details
Whether I'm out walking or just looking around me in our garden, I constantly see beautiful leaves whose characters I long to transfer to cloth.
Eco printing is a natural-dyeing technique where leaves are bundled with fabric and heat from steam or water releases the dye found inside them, creating an imprint sometimes breathtakingly full of detail, at other times more diffused. Leaves from the same plant in another season may yield different colours as the pigments have subtly altered during the weeks and months.
It takes many hours to prepare the cloth, lay and bundle the plant material, heat and wait, unwrap and wash – truly slow-living. I use no powdered mordants, just natural substances. The unwrapping of each bundle is always joyful, exciting and often a complete surprise. You can read more about the making of this scarf on my blog.
