Item details

Resting deer on a soft stone coloured box, the glaze gently picks out details on the face and body of the deer, breaking to a tan colour.

Both boxes are slightly different, they are slab built with a modelled and carved deer on the lid. I make them free hand, so the sizes vary and use a glaze that breaks to tan to highlight the carving and details, giving a different finish on each piece. I fire to stoneware temperature.

I’m trying to capture how lovely deer are but watch them move and you see the strength in their movement. Gentle and strong, elusive creatures of mystery.

Approximately 9cm high, 6cm wide and 4 cm deep.

These boxes are inspired by the captive deer I see on a regular walk and old stories that link deer to the gateways to other worlds.

I think the opening of gateways and the things we keep in boxes have a link. Do the contents hold a key to somewhere else? Is it a secret? A clue?
