I started making these advent stockings over ten years ago when my daughters were little. The selection of advent calendars at the time was much more limited and I loved the idea of being able to fill the stockings with sweets and little treats that I knew they would like. Each day they would rush home from school to see what was in the stocking that day. Even now (when they are 20 and 17) the stockings come out each year and there is a general expectation that they will be filled each day!
Top tip: I have learned from experience that it is best to pop a treat in the stocking on a daily basis rather than enthusiastically filling all 24 stockings in advance, otherwise the treats magically disappear long before Christmas Eve!

Twenty four little stockings made from leftover oddments of red and cream Christmassy cotton fabric and numbered 1-24. All ready to be filled with sweets or small treats of your choice in lead up to Christmas. The stockings are supplied with twenty four pegs, 1.5 metres of red and white twine and come packed in a simple fabric storage bag to be brought out year after year.
.
Fix the string onto a mantelpiece, dresser or cupboard and then simply peg the little stockings in place in the manner of a washing line, spacing them out to fit the available space. They are then ready to fill with a selection of sweets and little treats for the twenty four days leading up to Christmas. As well as becoming a family tradition, this is a great way to help with number recognition for little ones.
Although there are many different Advent Calendars around nowadays, I love the fact that you can fill these little stockings with your own choice of treats and it's also a perfect way of repurposing leftover fabrics.
Each stocking measures approximately 5cm x 10cm - easily big enough to fit a Quality Street chocolate or a small Lindt figure! As the stockings are made from leftover fabrics some patterns may vary, although they will be in keeping with the red and cream theme.
NB this is not a toy and should be kept out of reach of babies and small children
Recycled, reusable, refillable and really rather lovely!
