I love every aspect of the natural world, from its landscapes and colours to its plants and wildlife - hopefully that is reflected in my work.
The Southerndown curve is my attempt to capture this popular beach along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, near my home in South Wales. It is a very familiar sight having visited it regularly throughout my life, and on most days, you can see the coast of Somerset in the distance. As a keen walker, the fabulous scenery along this Jurassic coastline with its dramatic cliffs provides lots of inspiration for fused glass pieces. I snap away on my phone as I walk, capturing scenes which I later use back in my workshop.

This made to order freestanding fused glass curve depicts an early summer’s day at Southerndown Beach in the Vale of Glamorgan.
It is made from a combination of smooth and tactile textured glass to give it a sculptural feel, and comes in glorious aqua and turquoise colours which really glow in the light. No seaside scene would be complete without gulls so I have hand-painted a few to add an element of life.
The versatile Southerndown curve can be placed on windowsill so that when the sun shines through the glass, the colours of the scene are thrown onto the surface in front of it, as shown in the photo below. It can also be displayed against a plain pale wall where its colours can be appreciated in their true brightness.
Making the curve is a lengthy and fiddly process. I start by cutting and layering sheet glass which is then fused together in my kiln overnight. More glass is added before firing again and once it has cooled, the piece is fired for the final time to get its curved shape.
The piece is 16cm wide, 16cm high and 6cm deep. Should it need a clean, it is easily wiped over with warm soapy water.
Your curve will be posted with Signed For delivery, securely packaged in a double walled box and with as much eco-friendly packaging material as possible.
Southerndown curve would make a thoughtful and beautiful gift for those who love Wales, the beach, coastal landscapes or just the great outdoors.
