The historical binding style used for this unique book are laborious and thus not often used, but yields a book with superior stability and - if I may say so - style:
First the pages are sewn onto leather strips by hand.
Then, on the head and tail hand, stitched headbands are added using silk thread. On industrial bindings these are just decorative, but for this structure the endbands are functional and contribute to the coherence of the book.
The cover is made from folded paper through with the tapes from the sewing and the headband are laced, and then everything closed with tackets (a special stitch) and with just two drops of glue.
This handmade journal has 320 pages from a creme coloured sketching paper that works great with a broad variety of pens and pencils. It even takes the occasional watercolour or marker reasonably well.
The page format is approximately 12.5cm x 16cm (5" x 6.1/3"), a preferred format for compact journals.
The dimensions of the book (including the spine) are approximately
Width: 13cm (5")
Height: 16.5cm (6.5")
Thickness: 3cm (1.2")
The cover is made from a thick handmade Thai paper, its black and white appearance accentuated by the bright right pattern on the decorative fly paper (the paper just before the text block.
This binding style is labourious but binding the book block separately and attaching a cover helps protect the inner binding. And attaching the book block without glue makes it easy to repair and care for the book without having to completely replace parts of the binding.
Therefore this style binding are among the oldest medieval bindings we still have intact.
