I was inspired by a visit to my local flower and produce show where winning vegetables were displayed on a background of lush black velvet so the vegetables shine like precious jewels and are as important if not more to their growers. They remind me of the jewellery on Tudor portraits which often feature black backgrounds. The competition is fierce and presentation is all.

Full description
This painting of vegetables on a black background is in acrylic paint on a 30cm x 20.5cm slim edged (1.5cm) canvas. It is supplied ready for display. The moment I saw these prize winning vegetables displayed on black velvet I knew I had to paint them. They are the crown jewels of a local gardener and these vegetables had been as carefully prepared as a Hollywood star at the Oscars!
