A rectangular cushion made from a vintage cross stitch/ embroidery and lovely Jacobean 'Tree of Life' patterned linen fabric.
I have used a beautiful vintage, highly-detailed cross-stitch embroidery from 1953 (signed by a wonderfully talented needlewoman called 'Florence Ashton'), to front this cushion. It depicts four separate scenes commemorating a Tyrolean holiday!
The first scene shows the holidaymakers arriving with their suitcases at the 'Sport Hotel', including a geranium be-decked balcony and bright sun parasols; the second scene shows an outing to a countryside church; the third, a walk through the market square of the local Tyrolean town; the final scene is a wonderful depiction of a fairy-tale like castle, perched high on a hill surrounded by a conifer forest (Florence has left her signature here for posterity in the bottom left).
This colourful piece of work has been framed using a picot-edged braid in 'pitch blue' by the Hip Haberdasher VV Rouleaux.
The front and rear of the cushion is made from a beautiful linen fabric, featuring a 'Tree of life' design in wonderful blues, greens and soft pinks set on a natural coloured background.
The neutral coloured zip is at the base of the cushion and all raw fabric edges have been overlocked for a professional finish.
The cushion measures approximately 59 by 49 cm and is filled with a British-made feather pad.
I have had this beautifully detailed piece of embroidery, featuring a wonderful array of stitching artistry, for a number of years waiting to bring it back to life as a cushion front, once the right complementary-coloured fabric came along.
Hard to believe this piece of work is 67 years old, the colours are still vibrant and the detail of the stitches are just wonderful. It was obviously a much-enjoyed holiday! I hope Florence would approve.
