This skull necklace has been hand-tooled from veg-tanned leather.

I selected a piece of leather, before carving and tooling onto it to create the skull design. It's then painted with acrylic leather paints and sealed.
The piece has been mounted onto a nother piece of leather. The piece also features a dark green-coloured chain.

My hand-tooled pieces start life as a flat piece of veg-tanned leather.
The leather is then prepared (with water), before the design is marked out. Using a special carving knife, certain lines of the pattern will be cut into the leather. Specially designed stamps are then hammered into the piece to create texture and design elements. Any moulding to shape that needs to happen will then take place.
After the piece is dry, the leather is painted with leather acrylic paints. This often requires several layers and blends to get the right effect (you’ll see this with my dragon pieces).
Once the paint is dry, the piece will be sealed, and findings will be applied (brooch backs etc).
Each piece is unique. A lot of time, care and attention is put into them.
