Seals are a regular sight here in Cornwall, finding a cliff top walk and looking down onto a secluded cove inhabited only by seals can be a real treat.

Full description

My largest seal so far, made as a single piece and also goes with the medium curled seal as a paired set.

GREY - Raku fired with mottled white crackle glaze & natural smoked clay, a very randomly applied glaze with natural sponges.

White available on separate listing

Size: 26 cm on average (length varies a little due to hand finishing, slumping and elongating during making)

Pictures shown are general as the crazing & mottling on each piece is unique.

Raku is a very quick firing process that has evolved from ancient Japanese tea bowl ceremony firings. Small homemade gas fired kilns fire up to 1,000° c to melt the glaze, this is considered a low temperature in ceramics, each piece is then taken from the kiln at this temperature with tongs and placed into a bin of wood-shavings, burnt & fresh sawdust all sourced from a local carpenter, window & kitchen maker. Sawdust instantly burns and produces carbon smoke which, as the piece rapidly cools crazing the glaze, absorbs into the clay through the bare unglazed and the crazing, this produces the rich smoky crazing and distinctive wood smoke smell of raku. As each piece cools the crazing effect is entirely random and creates a very unique sculpture every time. It can take from a few hours to overnight to cool gradually before scrubbing clean.

RAKU IS NOT FROST PROOF SO NOT SUITABLE FOR KEEPING OUTDOORS
