A square Oxford cushion made from Handblocked Linen Toile de Jouy fabric from the 1940s. The fabric features classical statuary and figures in Baroque 18th Century dress, all set within a floral and tree-lined garden landscape. The colours of this soft linen fabric range from muted blues and greens punctuated by brighter reds and pinks. The Oxford border has been defined using a pale lobelia and pink scroll gimp from the London-based 'Hip Haberdasher' VV Rouleaux.

The rear of the cushion has been backed using a woven upholstery weight fabric in complementary soft raspberry pink, featuring a diamond trellis design with pale blue, yellow and black highlights. The cushion opening (raspberry-red coloured zip) is incorporated into the back panel.

The cushion measures approximately 52 x 52 cms (including the Oxford border) and is filled with a 45 x 45 cms British-made feather pad to provide a softer, informal cushion for a favourite armchair or bed.

I just love the soft feel and imprecise outline you get from a hand-blocked fabric and unlike the monochrome nature of most Toile de Jouy fabrics, this one comes in an array of muted colours, lit up by brighter spots of red in the costumes of the human figures and the garden flowers.

It is always a pleasure to transform a fabric this old (1940s) that is still in great condition to give it a new lease of life. I have just enough fabric to make a second cushion which I hope to do in the future in order to make a soft, informal pair for a well-dressed bed perhaps!?
