A European Peacock butterfly (Latin name Aglais io) hanging. A new line of butterflies as we have so many in the garden this spring, this truly is a piece of lock down art!
Designed and handmade at my home studio in Cheshire, England. I start each design by drawing from nature before starting to plan how the piece will work in glass.
My butterfly is made from 7 pieces of thin glass. The Peacock has an extra piece over the other butterflies as I wanted to give him eyes! I paint with enamels and add ground coloured glass and wire. Finally the surface is over-glazed and fired in a kiln.
This is the beginning of a new journey using techniques perfected in the garden birds. Clearly my World is shrinking but I am finding beauty and inspiration in what is around me!
The first picture is the butterfly hanging from an antennae, these are trapped in the glass so very strong. The next pictures show the work with a UK 20p coin for scale and angled to show the light behind the piece. The last image show it with the red admiral for scale and grouping.
His wing span is 23.4 cm across and 15 cm deep which includes the wire.
He would make a great gift for any gardener or nature lover.
