I started doing marquetry and parquetry a number of years ago and found it a satisfying hobby. I mainly create coasters as they take relatively little time compared to bigger projects and I can sell them for a reasonable price.
I donate any money made from sales to a local charity that I am involved with supporting people with learning disabilities.

Coaster size is 10cm square by 0.5cm thick
A plywood core, decorated with real wood veneer
Geometrical pattern of triangles and strips of natural wood colours giving a diamond effect
Wood veneer has a bee’s wax finish
Backed with black felt
My coasters are made from hand cut pieces of real wood veneer and glued to a plywood core for form geometrical patterns (parquetry) and sometime pictures (marquetry). Every design is different as the patterns tend to create themselves and different woods are used, but similar designs can be bought to make a set.
They are finished with a bee’s wax and withstand a good bit of use, even from hot drinks placed on them. It is easy to buff them up with furniture polish when they lose their shine, or they can be vanished for a harder wearing finish.
