It's well known among my friends and relations that Billie Holiday is my favourite singer and has been for for over fifty years, in which time I've created many images of her. I don't think she was ever at ease in front of the camera but there are a few pictures, usually taken when performing where she looks radiant and very alive. The popular image of Billie is that her songs are depressing or harrowing when in fact the vast majority were happy and joyful. I want to capture this feeling in the portraits I make of her. 'Billie' the recently released film about her promises to shed new light on her all too short life.
