Item details

The Green Man (a face with leaves growing from the features or sprouting from the mouth) was a common, though mysterious, symbol used by medieval carvers, and has long been an inspiration for my work. This example I "free carved" from a few simple lines drawn on the block of wood, rather than elaborate design sketches and patterns. I'm pleased with the result.

Full description

This is a woodcarving of a "green man" based upon a medieval example in the cloister roof of Norwich cathedral. He is entirely hand carved from Scottish oak, "fumed" to enhance the colour, and finished with beeswax. It has a keyhole plate on the back for easy wall hanging. This is a one of a kind product, and no other copies will be made. Size 120 x 130 mm.

Designed by Richard Spencer in Scottish Borders
