This cheery blue hip bag measures 21cm tall, 20 cm wide and 5cm deep - just the right size for carrying all those small bits and pieces you can't do without. The acrylic canvas is salvaged from the offcuts remaining from a yacht spray hood project. (Thanks to RBSails in Hayle).

These bags are generally worn on the right hip ( out of the way for UK drivers) , attached by a wide webbing belt with a quick release buckle. You could also carry it over your shoulder or cross-body.

The hip bag has a secure, zipped front pocket with an easy access pocket behind it. ( Either of these would hold a smart phone). The smaller side pockets are designed for pens and penknives. A small notebook, or similar, will fit into the pocket on the back. Inside there's a larger main compartment and three smaller subdivisions, to help to keep things separate. The elastic draw cord around the top is secured with a grip toggle.

This marine fabric has a water resistant coating. It can be reproofed after a gentle wash in warm water.

I made my first hip bag out of the big pockets on the front of a discarded waxed cotton coat - sewn together back to back. In my other job - as a countryside Ranger - I need something which can carry all the small things I want to keep to hand. The problem with rucksacks is that they have to be taken off. The problem with shoulder bags is that they keep swinging in front when you bend and move.

The hip bag design was born! I'm currently using a blue/green one, but each time I see the new colours I want one of those too. It seems that everyone's attracted to the blues....
