About Barefoot Pedlar

Barefoot Pedlar

I make useful things from materials I've salvaged, recycled or found.

This Barefoot Pedlar adventure started as a way of connecting some of the things that motivate me; keeping things out of landfill, spending time outside, being creative, and walking barefoot.

In April 2017 I took my courage in both hands and used my Pedlar's Certificate (yes! you need a licence - from the police station!) for the first time. My first walkabout was in the coastal townlet of Marazion in West Cornwall, not far from where I live. Since then I've done walkabouts in several Cornish towns and I've made a pedlar's cart out of an old bed and a wheelbarrow.

As well as selling stuff I always enjoy the conversations I have with people. Sometimes the talk is of waste, of the plastic free campaign, of beach litter. Sometimes folk are interested in why I walk barefoot. ( There are lots of reasons - to do with biomechanics, posture, evolution and others - but mostly I do it because it feels good!).

I collect materials from wherever they become available - it's amazing what you can find on the cliffs (trashed tents, abandoned leather jacket among other things. ) And I'm fortunate to have access to the scraps and offcuts produced at the local sail loft where I work part time.

My products are currently mostly made of fabric sewn on the industrial machines at the sail loft, but I also do sock-knitting, netting ( hammocks), crocheting, wood-turning, book-binding, and sea-glass jewellery-making. I'd like to invent a machine that could make some more time!

When I'm not being creative I'm either working as a countryside ranger or trying to engineer another opportunity to enjoy being on the sea in one way or another - dinghy sailing, kitesurfing or kayaking. Or eating.
