Shop Announcement:

Hi! Welcome to Dragon Art Glass on Folksy!

My name is Andrea and I'm a full time glass artist living and working in the valleys of South Wales.
I make a variety of different glassy items, and use different glass working techniques, so you will find things such as plates and bowls; beads and buttons, pictures, suncatchers and jewellery. Due to the processes used, very little of my work is identical, but mostly I am able to match items, so if you see something and it sells before you get chance to buy - feel free to get in touch.
I make a mix of fused, flameworked/lampworked and stained glass, and hope to soon be able to produce blown glass.
I am happy to accept commissions, so if you have something in mind I'm always up for a challenge!
Hope you enjoy my little piece of Folksy.

Large Sunny Owl freestanding arch panel

Love this

This is an unique, large freestanding arched panel, hand painted with an owl standing by a tree. It was inspired by the paintings of the late Inuit artist Kenojak Ashevak.
Firstly I made the sunny coloured background by blending different shades of powdered glass to make the sunshine background, then manipulating the powdered glass to give the impression of rays. The glass was then put into the kiln to melt the coloured powdered glass and fuse it to the base clear glass.
Next the details of the owl and tree were painted on a separate piece of glass, using glass enamel. This too went through a kiln process to fuse the enamel to the glass.
Next, the two pieces of glass were stacked in the kiln, and a third firing in the kiln too place - fusing the two layers together, making the piece 6 mm in thickness.
Finally, once cooled the piece went into the kiln for a fourth time, on a mold. this was for the shaping fuse, to make the piece into a free standing arched shape. It casts gorgeous bright colours if placed in the sunlight, for example on a window ledge, but looks just as good with fairy lights or a candle gently glowing behind it.
The arch is 9.5 inches across the back edge, by 7 inches high. If the curve of the arch is measured, the apex is about 4 inches, and the outer circumference is 12.74 inches.
Due to the weight and price this would need to be sent as a signed for parcel - this is reflected in the postage costs - it will be securely wrapped.

I love owls, and a particular influence of mine is the late Inuit artist Kenojak Ashevak. I love her unusual birds and their colours. Inspired by one of her owls in particular, i made this piece.
