Inspired by a trip to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine. The site of the worst nuclear disaster in the world, where many would expect to look like a dead wasteland, but after only 30 years actually looks more like a nature reserve. Where villages once stood, now it's mostly trees that can be seen, with nature reclaiming the area and all sorts of animals living there now, including species that hadn't been seen in the area for many years before the disaster. A harrowing reminder that as bad as radiation is for the world, much of nature still seems to prefer it to being near humans.

This painting is trying to visualise the idea that although this area can look like a beautiful, natural landscape thriving with life, hidden under the surface is an invisible danger, although everything may look normal, underneath the ground and growing through all the plants is something deadly.
(Note - the ground in Chernobyl isn't really cracked, merely painted that way to show what's hidden)
