Inspired by a trip to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine. The site of the worst nuclear disaster in the world, where many would expect to look like a dead wasteland, but after only 30 years actually looks more like a nature reserve. Where villages once stood, now it's mostly trees that can be seen, with nature reclaiming the area and all sorts of animals living there now, including species that hadn't been seen in the area for many years before the disaster. A harrowing reminder that as bad as radiation is for the world, much of nature still seems to prefer it to being near humans.

This painting is trying to visualise the idea that although this area can look like a beautiful, natural landscape thriving with life, hidden under the surface is an invisible danger, although everything may look normal, underneath the ground and growing through all the plants is something deadly.
(Note - the ground in Chernobyl isn't really cracked, merely painted that way to show what's hidden)

Full description

A Chernobyl scene covered in woodland - trees and plants have taken over where towns and villages once stood. The only hint of a past street is a lamppost hidden amongst the trees in the distance. The trees fade into a hazy blue sky, where the silhouette of a few small birds can be seen flying. Shady plants grow underneath the canopy of leaves, until the trees start to reach a clearing and bright yellow flowers grow, attracting butterflies and bees. On the surface the scene looks perfectly pleasant, the most unusual thing is an odd branch growing in a strange position, but underneath the ground and seeping into the trees is a hidden danger - radiation.

This original artwork is painted in acrylics on a 30cm (12") square canvas with deep 3.5cm (1.4") edges. Areas of the painting are built up with modeling paste, to make this slightly 3D on the ground. with the green representing the hidden radiation in the cracks. The image carries on over the edge of the canvas so there is no need for framing, and the canvas comes with a string on the back so it is ready for hanging.

The painting will be packaged with cardboard and bubblewrap to prevent any damage during shipping and will be sent tracked and signed.

If sold, 25% of the item price of this painting will be donated to AUGB's Help Ukraine fund.
