A small cherry wood automaton, one of a range of automata that I make. All parts, mechanism and dove are made from cherry wood except the central support that is made from birch plywood. It has brass fittings and delrin bushings for durable running.
It is 12cms high including the dove.
The dove is carved in 2 halves from cherry wood and contains a brass weight and gimbal. It is loose and sits on a guide pin. It is painted with acrylics with 3 coats of varnish, the final one being dead flat.
As the crank is turned the dove moves from side to side, turning at each end.
Most of my automata are made from beech and lime woods. Taking inspiration from old Japanese automata I wanted to make a small intricate design that minimised supporting structures and revealed the mechanism. I make another automaton called Tickbird visits the Museum that uses a similar bird motion and this is reusing that idea in a different context and a smaller size. As with all my automata I strive for high quality and durability and so use brass with delrin bushings on the gears etc. I make a similar automaton with 2 doves.
