A flash of brilliant blue!
That's all I've seen so far of a kingfisher in the wild, tho I keep looking and hoping. I love their contrasting colours of bright turquoise and burnt orange, and the amazing agility -so quick and accurate.
They are a favourite subject in my workroom, one I will keep returning to.

Hand embroidered picture of a kingfisher resting on a branch.
With their contrasting colours, you'd expect a kingfisher to be easy to spot, but they're much more elusive than that.
This little study has been carefully stitched by hand with strands of embroidery threads, using stitches of various lengths and colours to build up depth and detail. It was stitched onto a background of a silky blue fabric that I salvaged from our wardrobe, and I used a satin ribbon to form the knarled branch he's resting on.
The stitched piece is about 4 x 4cms and the frame is just over 12 x 12cms. The frame is oak and the glass protects the picture for display, it's ready to hang.
It was photographed under natural light without the glass for clarity and accuracy, but I'm sure you know that screens and monitors vary.
A great gift idea for a bird watcher or nature lover...
