Hand- embroidered picture of a Hare.

Secretive and mysterious, the Hare is an intriguing creature.

I've stitched this image using a technique I call "drawing with threads", which describes my method of building up little stitches to make the picture, adding detail and creating depth. There's a tiny glint of gold thread for his whiskers and highlighting his amber eyes.

This Hare study is stitched with Anchor threads onto fabric scraps, then framed behind glass in an oak frame for display and protection. The little stitched piece measures just under 4cm x 4cm and the frame is approx 12cm x 12cm, ready for hanging.

I've photographed the picture in natural light without the glass to show it as clearly as possible, but I'm sure you're aware that screens and monitors do vary.

Hares are beautiful and interesting animals.

When I was a young child we lived near a secret wild woodland, where I spent many happy hours. Near the edge was a tiny meadow that occasionally had cattle grazing. But someone else lived in the meadow - I used to quietly watch the hares amongst the grasses. I even knew where the leverets where.

I didn't realise then how lucky I was to see these secretive animals so closely. Since then, living in different parts of the county, I've only had one or two rare glimpses of them.

And now, they are a favourite subject in my work, always trying to do justice to their personality and mystery.
