Item details

I am fascinated by the small details of the natural world, so I often notice fallen acorn cups and the shapes of curious fungi and lichens that grow nearby. Using a magnifying lens to look closely at these treasures is like diving in to a whole other world! By creating this sculpture I was trying to capture some of that intricate detail and beauty, and to share that sense of wonder I find in seeing something curious for the first time.

When I found this photograph at an antiques fair it reminded me of the stories of Sunday afternoon boating trips on Whittlesey Mere (a large lake that was drained in the 1800s). It took a long time to find a box that was the right shape and feel for the photograph, and then even longer deciding what else to put inside! One day I was trying out different options when I picked up the acorn cup and it fitted perfectly... it just needed a centre, which I made from porcelain, because of its preciousness.
