Love this

This handmade journal has 320 pages from a creme coloured sketching paper that works great with a broad variety of pens and pencils. It even takes the occasional watercolour or marker reasonably well, but is best suited for dry media.

The page format is approximately 12.5cm x 16cm (5" x 6.1/3"), my preferred format for journals to take on the go as it fits well into a bag.

The dimensions of the book (including the spine) are approximately

Width: 13cm (5")
Height: 16.5cm (6.5")
Thickness: 3cm (1.2")

The cover is made from a handmade Asian paper (not made by me) embellished and re-enforced with pieces of parchment (animal skin).
The binding with red thread that is visible on the spine is a secondary binding that attaches the sewn text block to the cover. The binding of the book block is executed with a neutral coloured bookbinding thread, so that the thread spanning on the centre spread here and there does not visually slices through your pages.

I created this book while filming myself for a skillshare class in which I teach this binding technique. If you are interested in learning how it is made, check out the class here:

Any other questions, -- let me know!

This is a fusion binding on many levels: The technique is medieval, as is the use of parchment as a stiffener and guard against the possibility of the thread tearing through the covers.
But instead of using leather, I used a handmade, calligraphed Asian paper, to give a stunning array of colours in black and white, and red.

With its secondary binding, this book combines the aesthetics of an exposed sewing where the functional threads are part of the visible design with the enhanced stability an inner binding can give.
