Every MidWinter in Mousehole, Cornwall - Tom Bawcock's Eve is celebrated.
After dark if you look out to sea from Mousehole, you face East & will see the 3 stars of Orion’s belt (3 kings), point towards Sirrius (the birth star), rising above the horizon. A familiar Celestial Event!
A Long Time Ago, in Cornwall... Mousehole fisherman, Tom Bawcock, set sail in the least violent storm during a winter of gales which had prevented any fishing & the village was starving. He returned with a haul of pilchards et al & the fishing village celebrated with a Starry Gazey Pie (fish pie made from pilchard, mackerel etc with their heads & sometimes tails poking up through the pastry lid)
This Christmas card is my original StarGazey Sky design from which the Zodiac versions were conceived...

StarGazey Fish observing the Three Kings (Orion's Belt) pointing to the Birth Star (Sirrius) rising in the East. This is a Cornish Christmas Card.
I’ve built & cut two Lino blocks to create the image. Which I’ve hand inked & hand printed using my old Adana Press. The StarGazey Fish is inked using Seville Black. I mixed turquoise ink with ultramarine to achieve a dark twilight for the sky. I've hand printed this twice to achieve the completed image, on artist paper.
I then typeset the info on the back, using old metal letterpress which I hand ink & hand print also in Seville black, the 3rd impression - which I then fold to form a card.
