Your grandmother probably had some thread of this kind in one of her kitchen drawers. This is a general use linen thread, non-dyed and food save (save to use in the kitchen for tieing and cooking meats).
It can be used for many hobbies and crafts, such as kite-making, mobile making, or bookbinding. Or use it to tie on a parcel, or to hang a picture. Virtually anywhere where you want to use a strong, natural thread.
It is available in different thicknesses, but only No. 16 is left in stock at the moment:
