Description

William Morris prints provide a sumptuous warmth and richness to the colouring of this traditional log cabin quilt. The log cabin patchwork block has a red centre to denote the warm hearth at the centre of your home. Traditionally, the 'logs', in alternating dark and light colours, represent the ups and downs of family life. Surrounding the twelve log cabin blocks are a narrow red border that helps to draw attention to the red squares dotted through the quilt and then a broader, gold flecked border that I think adds to the richness of the whole.

The fabrics used front and back are all 100% cotton. The Hobbs 80% cotton 20% polyester wadding gives the quilt a comfortable weight and drape. I have quilted wavy diagonal lines of stitching in an old gold shade of cotton thread across the quilt, echoing the diagonal pattern created by the light and dark sides of the blocks. On the back of the quilt I have added a makers label stating the quilt's name, 'Keep the Home Fires Burning', the date and place of its making.

The quilt measures 165cm long by 129cm wide (65" x 51") and would look at home draped across a sofa next to a roaring fire, across the end of a bed or used as a blanket in a conservatory or summer house - maybe even a picnic blanket!

All the materials used are suitable for machine washing on a gentle cycle.

Designed and made with attention to detail in my smoke-free, pet-free home.

Inspiration

I'm always inspired by the history of quilts and the log cabin block is one of the most evocative of all the blocks designed in the 1800's. Whenever I use William Morris prints I think of his maxim that anything we have in our home should be beautiful and practical.
