Why choose hand knotted pearls? The most important reason for choosing pearls knotted in the traditional manner is that the knots between the precious pearl beads protect them from rubbing against each other and damaging their lustre. Pure silk thread drapes like nothing else, and in contrast to beading wire, it does not kink over time. So you can be sure your necklace will look as elegant as it did when it was brand new, even after having been stored in a jewellery box. Pure silk thread is strong and resists stretching or breaking so, unless you wear your pearls daily, your necklace will not need restringing for many years.

Full description

I love making slightly unconventional but subtle necklaces from freshwater pearls to showcase just how versatile these sustainable and renewable gemstones are. This particular strand of pearls comprised many of the natural un-dyed colours in which pearls grow within the shell. From pure white, through cream, to delicate apricot, peach, lavender pink, lilac and mauve, I was able to arrange them in such a way that the colours appear to fade from one to another, creating a very striking jewel. Each of these slightly irregular and highly lustrous pearls is of fantastic quality and measures between 8 and 10 mm in the cross section. I have knotted them on natural pink silk using the traditional skills, with French wire to prevent wear against the clasp and a knot between each bead to prevent damage from the pearls from rubbing against one another. Truly luxurious, this necklace is long, at a generous 650 mm or 2 feet 1 1/2" in length. Ample to wear over a shirt collar or high neckline or even wrap around twice. It fastens with a sterling silver bolt ring clasp, the tag of which I have forged myself from sterling silver wire. The final picture shows the necklace folded into sixths next to a 3" 80 mm vintage lipstick case for scale.

It is packaged carefully in a presentation gift box, fastened with a co-ordinating ribbon and bow.
