My hawkmoth design handprinted onto fine Scottish linen.
This is a medium - heavy weight scoured linen with a lovely authentic character. It is one of the highest quality linens woven in Scotland. Photo 1 gives the best indication of colour.
Screen printed in eco friendly black ink and sewn in my home studio.
Finished with a black piped edge and a sturdy black cotton canvas back, filled with a quality feather pad.
The process - my designs are developed from sketches and drawing inspired by my experiences of the local countryside and it's inhabitants - often this is just a fleeting moment, an expression, a reaction, a sense of excitement or wonder in the sheer beauty of nature.
As I develop design ideas there is usually one which is a clear favourite and I tend to have a good idea of what the design would lend itself to best - whether that's a framed print, a lampshade or a cushion. I size and orientate the image during the drawing process to suit it's purpose.
The drawing is then transferred onto a silkscreen. Test prints are made to ensure all is well (drawing ink across the surface of the screen with a squeegee), before the final fabric is lined up to print.
This cushion measures 16.5" x 11", has a black piped edge and a sturdy black canvas back. A zip is tucked away in the lower seam.
Duck feather inner supplied with the cushion.
The dark secret beauty of our native hawkmoth fascinates me. Experiments with sketching the Hawkmoth led me to create a lino cut - this print is an enlarged version of that original lino print - transferred to a silkscreen and screen printed by hand.
Each part of the process is done by myself - the design, the printing and the sewing. I source my linen from Scottish linen makers and use earth friendly inks as I am passionate about sustainability.
