Labradorite is such an enigmatic stone to work with. It comes in earthy tones of rust, green, brown and warm silvery grey but, when the light is in the right direction, will send out a sudden flash of violet, kingfisher blue or gold. Each bead in this necklace has it's own little flash, but it will only show it if the light is right, and the appearance of each bead changes when the necklace moves. I have linked these beads using a wire wrapping technique with sterling silver wire, creating a handmade chain with a glistening sterling silver circle at the centre, to represent the power of the Moon or of Karma. What goes around comes around! The necklace is finished with a bolt ring clasp and the chain is stamped 925 for sterling silver. It has a finished length of 430 mm or 17 1/2" and is beautifully presented in a gift box tied with a satin bow, ready to be given as a present to someone special.
The final photograph shows the necklace with a 3" vintage lipstick case to give a sense of scale.
Labradorite has only recently started to gain popularity in mainstream jewellery, but has always been considered a talisman by the Innuit, who say that the brilliant flashes of colour the stone displays are remnants of the Northern Lights, trapped in the crystal. This is said to bring light to the wearer and to help them find their true path. Because of this, it is still an unusual stone to give and will always cause comment when worn.
