Item details

Turned on a traditional, foot powered pole-lathe.

This is a medium size bowl ideal for salad helpings, soups, pasta, stir fry or cereals.

It is an open form, the walls are sweeping a bit more outwards than upwards.

The lines are straight and minimalist, a style I prefer over too much ornaments. Wood has an inherent beauty, in normally doesn't need frills...

The wood is creamy and has some spalting in it. I burnished the walls but did not sand them. Burnishing is a traditional way of putting some sheen on and is a little magic trick I love to employ.

The bowl is a one-off and ready to use or to give away as a lovely little gift.

This is a proper heritage craft bowl and is turned with hook tools only. The finish could be called 'hooked finish' ,but I believe no one calls it like that. Well, never mind.

Pole-lathe turners are rare nowadays and I personally delight in keeping it alive.

There wasn't much left of the wood from the beech tree I sourced from near Wastwater and it was time to get onto the lathe.
I decided on an open form to let the subtle spalting shine through and to give it an inviting shape for eating.
I believe, I must have thought about my daily bowl of salad I eat and how lovely it is to use a hand made eating vessel. Here for you to enjoy!
