The idea for this pendant started when I was artist-in-residence with the John Clare Trust. John Clare was a Victorian poet who grew up in Helpston, a village in Cambridgeshire. He wrote about his local countryside, and had an eye for the small details in nature.
Reading Clare's poetry inspired me to get to know some of the places that he wrote about with such precision and love. I became interested in the plants that now grow in those places; particularly their textures, structures and forms. My work doesn't attempt to precisely copy nature, but focuses on those small details that I find beautiful and intriguing, and which I hope others will enjoy too...

Full description
Inspired by British lichens and fungi, this beautiful porcelain pendant was made entirely by hand using a few simple tools.
First I shaped the soft porcelain clay in to a shallow cup, then drew the fine lines on the front with a sharply pointed tool. A tiny ‘dot’ of porcelain was added as the focal point in the centre. The pendant was then dried, smoothed, and fired in my kiln to 1245 degrees centigrade.
The pendant hangs from a metal bail on a waxed cotton cord with two sliding knots. This allows the length of the cord to be adjusted, to a maximum of about 60 cm (24 inches).
The pendant itself is approximately 22mm in diameter and about 7mm thick (not including the bail). Including the bail, it is about 26mm long and 9mm thick. The porcelain is matt, and unglazed.
The pendant was made without the use of moulds, so it is not perfectly round and the edges are slightly uneven… all of which, I think, adds to its natural, and genuinely handmade style.
